Spencer Beach Park on the Big Island of Hawaii
Many pictures of Spencer beach below this description of it.
Spencer’s Beach Park is a small to medium size crescent of white sand located just below the Kawaihae Pier and the Temple on the Hill of the Whale Heiau off of Highway 270. It’s easy to find and easy to get to. This is at least a 30 minute drive North of Kailua-Kona.
This beach is good for camping and kids, in my opinion. Swimming at Spencer’s is usually decent, and the waves are almost always mild and great for the little ones to play in. There is a lifeguard till about four on weekends and holidays. There is security, bathrooms, drinking water, and showers.
It can occasionally get really windy - as Spencer’s is geographically in a place that catches the wind as it comes down from the mountains, but if it’s not windy this is practically a perfect place for families.
Nearby activities and things to do are the Ala Kahakai trail, and the Pu’ukohola Heiau. You could drive 20 minutes up to Waimea for dinner or horseback riding, 20 minutes up to Hawi for art galleries or 30 minutes south to Kailua-Kona for shopping and more beaches there and along the way. There is no hotel right at Spencer Beach Park but there are plenty along the Kohala Coast and a couple in Waimea.
