How do I ship my Car and Furniture and Stuff to Hawaii and How much does it Cost?
When I moved to Hawaii, I had movers come and pack up all my furniture and appliances and ship them. I just looked in the phone book and started calling companies and asking if they did relocations to Hawaii. I then drove my car to a port and the shipping company inspected it and put it in a container and shipped it out here for me. There was a month or so lag if I remember right (this was many, many years ago) between when I arrived in Hawaii and when my stuff got here.
Another option is having the shipping company drop off a container at your house - 20 and 40 foot are pretty standard sizes - you filling it yourself, and then they come and get it and put it on the boat.
Some people sell most of their big items and their cars with the plan of buying new when they get here, in the hopes of saving money on shipping. If you go this route, just be aware that everything is more expensive out here, even furniture and cars. It still may be worth it but you may want to look at car and furniture prices on some local sites or in the newspaper classifieds.
Here are some shipping companies that deliver household goods and/or vehicles to Hawaii:
As for prices, in 1995 it cost about $800 to ship a very small car to Hawaii from California. Checking the price in early 2007, according to the Matson site, they charge $975. A friend of mine recently moved to Florida and she was charged a little over $4600 for a 20 foot container from Hilo to Florida.
