Oahu Snorkeling

Snorkeling Hanauma Bay

Some of the best Oahu snorkeling possible is at Hanauma Bay. This bay is actually half of a volcanic crater. The ocean side of the crater collapsed a long time ago and created a perfect half-moon bay. The bay is a protected underwater park, which means no fishing is allowed, which means the fish absolutely flourish here. This is one of the only places in Hawaii where you will have to pay to go to the beach. The price is $5.00 for 13 and older and parking is $1.00 (get here early, parking fills up fast).

Snorkeling equipment can be rented right on the beach. The shape of the bay usually provides some protection for snorkelers from waves. Visibility is good, and fish and coral are everywhere. Park is closed on Tuesdays. This is a really nice beach for kids.

More Oahu Snorkeling

Shark's Cove
Located on the North Shore just off the highway between Haleiwa and Pupukea, Shark's cove is really only safe during the summer months while the waves are manageable. The cove is protectected by a ring of lava and is full of fish.

Lanikai Beach
Locate next to Kailua beach on the windward side (in Kailua). The snorkeling is good near the reef, and this beach is just gorgeous. The swimming and relaxing are fantastic here.

Turtle Bay
A very nice cove with good snorkeling during the summer months. Located near the north shore just past the Hilton.

Waikiki Beach is not a very good snorkeling spot. There is no real reef and the bottom is all sand. You will see some fish, but no colorful reef fish.

If you are an absolute beginner and interested in snorkeling lessons on Oahu, consider a snorkeling cruise or boat. Check with the tour - most will provide lessons or at least instruction.
