Maui Snorkeling

June 8th, 2004

Maui is a fantastic island for snorkeling for both beginner and expert. You can take a tour or boat to Molokini or other snorkel spots, go to the beach behind your hotel, or visit any one of the fabulous beaches known for great snorkeling on Maui.

Good Maui Snorkeling Spots

  • Honolu'a Bay
This is a great spot during the summer months. During the winter, the waves are too high. The bay is full of coral and fish.
  • Kapalua Bay
This is a nice sandy beach with good snorkeling on the north side.
  • Molokini Crater
Partially sunken volcanic crater that you must take a boat tour to. Fantastic visibility.
  • Makena Landing
Go in the morning before the tradewinds start up. Best snorkeling to the right of the beach.
  • Ulua Beach
Nice beach with good snorkeling along the rocks on the south side.

Snorkel Rentals on Maui

If you don't have snorkel equipment you can buy it or rent it once you are in the islands. I would recommend getting fins and a decent mask. The one with the seperate spot for your nose works best for me. The snorkel itself comes in many qualities also - I like the one with the valve on the bottom so you can blow extra water out easily. Prescription masks are available. Boss Frog's and Snorkel Bob's are the most popular equipment rental places with many locations.
