Jet Ski in Kailua-Kona, Big Island
Last weekend, on a whim, we drove to Kona and went out with Aloha Jet Ski to their platform in the ocean out past Kailua Bay and took out one of their jet skis. I have never been on a jet ski before and it was just about the most fun I’ve ever had in my whole life.
We met up at the desk on Kailua Pier, they drove us out of the bay in a small boat, and took us to a platform way out in the ocean with four jet skis ready to go. We signed our waivers, paid our money, adorned our life vests, were given instructions and were let loose for 1 hour. We were supposed to make mostly right hand turns and travel in a general large loop between a bunch of landmarks - some junk boats, some bouys, and some large, anchored cruise boats. It was fun, fun, fun. Children as tall as 42 inches can go with an adult but my son didn’t want to because he would have to ride behind his dad and he just didn’t feel protected enough that way. Plus he was a little thrown off by the rocking of the platform. Of course by the end of my hour he had his sea legs and really was enjoying himself just being out on the water.
The jet skis - or waverunners, I think they really are - were very easy to manuever and drive. They have handlebars and a finger throttle. Me - I rode mine like a horse as fast as I could and never fell off once. Of course, I was so sore (thighs, and back of arms) I could barely walk the next day, so don’t overdo it if you don’t want to just hang around the hotel.
So, if you are looking for a jet ski fix or have never tried it before consider Aloha Jet ski - as far as I know they are the only company currently offering jet ski rides in Kona.
