Well a lot of times when you get into higher elevations (heck sometimes even 500 ft above sea level) you can encounter rain a lot more frequently than the coast. In which case the convertible is kind of useless. Now we've gone at some times and never encountered rain and since you're not in rainy season, you may never see a drop. Checking the weather on Yahoo for next week it looks to be mostly/partly cloudy and windy for 4 days (through Wed).

We like 4x4's for several reasons. Many cool beaches and sights are at the end of roads that require or recommend 4WD's. Don't get me wrong, plenty of sights are available off perfectly paved roads as well but I personally feel like if you want to be completely uninhibited for an impromptu adventure, you won't have to wonder if your rental will make it. (Like Saddle Rd is driven by locals all of the time in little pop squat cars so yes you could take a convertible but you might have a more comfortable ride on the bumpier sections)

It all depends what you want to see and do.

So go with your gut and you'll have a great time no matter what! :-)
