4WD or Convertible on the Big Island

I am visiting the Big Island next week with my spouse and 2 daughters. We all think that a convertible would be fun but have been told that a 4WD vehicle is a must. Will we be at a big disadvantage if we got with the convertible? What will we miss? I am not too concerned with the rental car insurance as my personal insurance will cover me on rental agency "forbidden" roads.
