There are some excellent beaches on the windward side and the north shore that you would probably really enjoy, but they will have more people on them. However, the farther away you get from Waikiki, the less tourists you will encounter, so that's a hard one. If you can afford to skip the free nights, then go for it! Oahu also has lot of good hiking - not as much as Kauai, but Oahu definitely has some very nice places to hike -- you just have to fight the traffic to get there. If you decide to go to Oahu, just plan your day to be leaving Honolulu in the morning, when everyone else is heading in to work, and to be coming back in the evening when everyone else is leaving. The Big Island is big, so you won't be able to do too many things in one day. I would plan on at least 4-5 days or more. - One activity a day would be ideal. Oh, and since the three things you mentioned are all close to each other and in Kau/Puna I would suggest spending at least three nights in Volcano Village or somewhere in Kau. You won't be near the ocean, but your drives will be much shorter than if you stayed in Kona. (Kona to volcano is 2 hours)
