Hi-
It's about a 1 - 2 hour drive, depending on the traffic. In the winter, if the surf is high, count on alot of people going up to see the waves. Although it is a fairly long drive, the scenery is magnificent, especially for the adults. Usually the North Shore is pretty hazardous in the winter. But there are some protected bays (Kahana Bay is one of my favorites)and tide pools in other areas, so you just need to be aware of the conditions and of posted warnings. You'll find some nice parks that will keep your 1 year old plenty occupied. Common sense plays a big part.
-Aloha
