We just went to the big island in November and we basically wore shorts all day and evening without changing. One night I decided to carry along a light jacket while we were out shopping and I never needed it.

However, if you are going to the volcano you will need long pants and a light jacket. It is more for protection than coldness though. I did fall on the lava once and cut my hand, so I'm sure you could cut up elbows and knees.
