Well - one of the best places to attend a luau is at the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu - but if you are not going anyway, I wouldn't go for just the luau, it's kind of far out of the way from Waikiki. There are many places on all the islands to go to a luau, and several "luau companies" travel around from hotel to hotel holding the event - so you are getting the same thing no matter where you go in most cases. This isn't a bad thing - just something to be aware of. Luaus are not a must-do, but they are a very good experience. A luau will probably be your only chance to experience many traditional island foods all in one meal. The plate lunch places may serve poi or kalua pig, but they won't have lomilomi salmon or haupia ... etc Plus - it *will* be your only chance to see a pig cooked in an imu, unless you have friends over here. And - the entertainment is quite good, the music, hula, and firedancing are all very entertaining and make for good pictures. Here's a good page on one of Oahu's best luas http://www.alohafriends.com/luauadventure.html and on the Big Island I recommend the one at the Outrigger waikiki as affordable and entertaining. Have fun!
