Posted by Lisa on June 14, 19102 at 22:05:07: We went to the volcano park last week on Monday the 10th. Chain of Craters road was closed during the day because of the forest fires .. low visibility plus fire equipment using the road. We left the park a couples minutes after 2:00pm. Chain of craters road was opened back up that night at 6:00pm. A family that we met later stayed around til then, went down the road and then hiked in using flashlights. They did get to see the glow of the lava as a result. I would have liked to have seen that but we were pretty done in after hiking down into Kilauea Iki crater, Thurston's tube and driving the rim road one and a half times. It rained just before we got to the bottom of Kilauea Iki which made it pretty steamy for the hike back up! By the way, I recommend flashlights for anybody going to the big island as they are useful for any night activity such as the lava hike, the Mauna Kea observatory, etc. Barry : Ok, I called the tour company, and here's what they said : Chain of Craters road has been closed during the day for the last couple of weeks due to a wildfire in the National Park, so if it is closed they do the tour around the crater at the top (no lava) and have lunch at the volcano house and stop at the other sights in the park, plus they do a waterfall (either akaka or rainbow) and the orchid farm and the macadamia nut factory. If the road is open, they do all of the above plus go down chain of craters road to the lava flow. The lava is currently about a mile in from where the road ends, but the bus only stays down there for about 30 minutes, so you can not hike all the way out to it on the tour. : If you were to go on your own, there is a possibility of seeing flowing lava, but only if conditions were right and safe, and you were willing to hike out and back. : Lisa
