I would have to say for the islands, you need a car to really experience the islands. In HI, car rentals are some of the cheapest in the nation. I would not skip on this. From what I have seen of bike rentals for 3 people, it would just be as cheap to rent a car. Look on the web for good deals. Last time I rented a car in HI, I used a discount code for being a Costco member. National has good deals. For cheap accomidations, look at private condos/apartments etc. You might also look at camping on either Maui or Big Island. I would not recommend it on Oahu (from personal experiences). My hubby, son, and I camped at a church camp ground on Maui. I think it was about $10 a night, with a private out door shower. We are not affiliated with any church, just wanted to be some place private to camp since some islands are not safe in state/county camp grounds. Well it rained the entire time which made things a little bad. We have camped on other islands, and the only thing I have to say is budget for bad weather when you need to go to hotel. A few years back, we were camping on Kauai on X-mas when a big storm came in, but not before Santa visted my 6 year old on a remote beach with presents--he didn't think santa would be able to make it in a tent:) It was great but we had to go to hotel until the storm was over. Other than that, we loved it. How eles can you get ocean front without spending big bucks. I let the ocean confort me to sleep every night. Anyways, that might not be your thing. I think there are many alternatives to "high price" hawaii if you look. Many of them are not within distance to conveniences/tourist areas--that is why you need a car!
Aloha,
Shara
