Well - only if you are going to go off-road - except jeeps are actually a pretty popular rental here, so maybe if you want it just for fun.

There are two roads on the big island that the regular car rental places tell you not to take their cars - Saddle Road and South Point rd. People do it anyway, neither road is very bad, but if you get in a wreck - you're screwed.

South Pojnt Road is the only option to see South Point, but saddle road is only for saving time between Hilo and Kona, and can be avoided alltogether if needed.

If you plan on going to the green sand beach or other places where you may need the four wheel drive, then rent it, but otherwise all the roads are fine :-)
