All the islands offer different attractions of course and any island would be good for you; but I would recommend Oahu for those who want to stay out of the sun. Get a birds-eye view at the Aloha Tower observation deck, 10 stories up. This tower has a great panoramic view of the downtown Honolulu harbor and waterfront. Immerse yourself in Polynesia Visit the 7 model island villages at the Polynesian Cultural Center to learn about the polynesian cultures of Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, Samoa and the Marquesas. The luau at the center is possibly the best and most authentic in the islands. Go shopping, and shopping, and shopping ... There are too many shopping centers and individual shops on Oahu to mention them all but these should give you an idea: Ala Moana Center is the largest open-air market place in the world with koi ponds and flowers abound. The Aloha Tower Marketplace is at the foot of Aloha Tower with more than 100 unique stores and restaurants. Hilo Hatties has the best Alohawear in the world. You will find matching mu'u mu'us and aloha shirts and bathing suits and tops and gifts, souveneirs and jewelry. The Aloha Flea Market is every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Aloha Stadium with more than 1000 vendors selling everything you can think of. visit the U.S.S. Arizona memorial and Visitors Center In Pearl Harbor, a memorial has been built over the top of the sunken battleship to honor the 1000 men who went down with that ship. Also in Pearl Harbor is battleship row featuring the "Mighty Mo", America's largest battleship, which is now retired and on display for tours. go to the Bishop museum and planetarium The Bishop museum has the worlds largest collection of Hawaiian and Polynesian history artifacts. see a real palace Iolani palace is the only real palace in the United States. It was built in 1882 by King Kalakaua and is very grand - complete with artifacts and the original furniture. Visit the Honolulu academy of Arts The academy of arts has a collection of European, Asian, American, and decorative arts. Take in a show There is the Aloha Stadium with football (the pro bowl and more), soccer matches, concerts, plays and baseball games. There is also Diamond Head Theatre with Broadway shows, musicals and revivals. So, that's definitely not everything there is to do on Oahu or in Hawaii without setting foot on the beach - but that should get you started. |
