Kauai Attractions

Kauai has several world-famous attractions to visit on your vacation. Bring your camera and get pictures of yourself at ... :

  • Waimea Canyon
On the West side of the island, accessible from the Southest shore, Waimea Canyon is ten miles long and about 3,600 feet deep. It is similar to the Grand Canyon in that it's a large hole in the ground that is really neat to look at, but it has it's own Hawaiian flair. From the viewing areas, the bottom can look pink ... or purple, and then the fade to green is truly unique. Helicopter tours of the canyon reveal wild goats, waterfalls, and deep valleys. Camping and hiking are allowed. More info and directions.

  • Wailua River and Fern Grotto
On the East side of the island, accessible from Wailua, the Wailua River can be paddled up by kayak, or cruised up by boat. Views of the mountain are spectacular, and it is the only way to get to Fern Grotto; a huge lava-tube cave lined with ferns. It is a popular spot for weddings. Picture and directions. Review of the boat trip.

  • Na Pali Coast
On the West side of the island, accessible by the North Shore for hiking, and West end for boat tours, Na Pali (the cliff) offers extreme hiking adventures and clear blue waters full of dolphins for boat, raft, or kayak trips (summer only due to high waves in winter). I recommend Captain Zodiac.

  • Wailua Falls
Remember the twin waterfalls in the opening credits of the old television show Fantasy Island? Those falls are easily accessible by car for viewing. The falls are on the East side of the island, just North of Lihue -- head north out of Lihue on Hwy 56 (Kuhio Hwy). At the bottom of Kapaia Valley, before you head back up, you'll see a sign for the falls at Ma'alo Road. Follow Ma'alo Road makai (towards the mountain) about 4 miles to the falls overlook.

More attractions coming soon, visit the Kauai Visitors Bureau for more Kauai information.
