01. ---Hotel Alternatives---

Do you always stay in hotels when you travel? Maybe you should consider an alternative on your next vacation. It's been my experience that the hotel alternatives usually provide better service, more privacy, and personal care, at a lower price. Convinced yet? Let's talk about your choices:

Condominium:
Condominiums are only one level removed from hotels, and sometimes can even function almost exactly like hotels. They are a complex of units available for rental located on the same grounds or in the same building, usually run by a central management, but owned by different people. The best condominiums are individual buildings, places on a complex with a pool and other amenities - you get your own house and a kitchen, and usually a porch, but you still get the conveniences of a hotel.

Bed and Breakfasts:
Bed and Breakfasts are usually one of two types: 1. A small inn 2. Someone's home. With the small inn, you'll get your own hotel-like room, and normally meet in a central location for breakfast during certain hours. With someone's home, you'll usually get a room, sometimes with a private entrance, in a separate part of the house from the living area (hopefully) and breakfast is provided for you at a given time. In both instances you can probably 'place an order' to a certain degree the night before or that morning.

Vacation Rental:
Vacation Rentals are normally private residences in residential areas. They have everything your own home would have (except personal stuff of course). You would pick up the key somewhere, or be given the combination to a lock box, and move in. Most times there are no hosts, or cleaning crews, just you and the house.

In my opinion, vacation rentals are the best option. They offer privacy, kitchens, real beds, parking space, barbecues, porches, and residential areas. Many times local libraries are available, so you don't have to buy your own guidebooks, which is a definite plus in Hawaii.

So where can you find the hotel alternatives in Hawaii? Easy, there are tons of them on the web. Decide what island you want to stay on, go to a search engine, and type in "Oahu vacation rental" or Big Island Bed and Breakfast", and you'll find many … or, you could try the one below on the Big Island.

Rental in Kapoho Beach lots
My husband and I stayed at this house in Kapoho Beach Lots (a private, gated subdivision). It was wonderful. We were right on the water, with a full kitchen and nice porch. Plus, there is a warm pond in the yard, heated with volcanic steam - that was pure heaven.
