Featured Links - Aloha everyone, this issue was supposed to go out on Thanksgiving Day, but between a storm frying my modem, and a gecko starting my treadmill on fire (it crawled under a circuit board and conducted electricity through to the plastic housing) -- I've been a little busy. Sorry. Below is the Thanksgiving Day words that were to be included: Happy in Hawaiian - Hau'oli (how-oh lee) Thanksgiving Day in Hawaiian - La Ho'omaika'i (lah ho-oh my kah-ee) Happy Thankgsgiving is not a literal or popular translation in the islands, but the above is close enough for fun. ... And there is a new schedule for the e-zine, it will now come out on the 1st, the 11th, and the 21st of each month. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ 01. --- Haleakala National Park on Maui ---The official website for Haleakala National Park is at http://www.nps.gov/hale/ .The park is located on Mt. Haleakala. Haleakala means "House of the Sun" which accurately foretells of one of the most famous activities here: watching the sun rise. The mountain is the highest point on Maui, over 10,000 feet high, and is easily one of the most spectacular places in the world to watch the sunrise from. The summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island can make similar claims, but both are much more difficult to get to. http://www.ekahi.com/sunrise.htm - picture http://www.scanwizards-photos.com/sunrise.htm - picture I've never done it - you have to get up at an atrocious hour to see it, and I am *not* an early-riser, but I've heard from people who have done it that it really is amazing. It is cold though (40 degrees F or less) - you'll need to dress in layers or wear a coat. There are tours available, and for the more adventurous, the bike or hike down from the summit is very popular; but you don't have to take a tour. You can drive up in a rental car. Bike down tours http://www.bikemaui.com/ http://www.bikedownthevolcanomaui.com/ http://www.cruiserphil.com/ Hike down tours http://www.mauibirdhikes.com/mauivolcanohiking.html http://www.mauiactive.com/maui-hiking2.html If you are considering hiking *all the way* down, read this first http://www.sfbaytraveler.com/hawaii/stories/x16haleakala_20000414.htm There is a Hawaiian legend about Haleakala, with regards to the sun. The demigod Maui (whom the island is named after) was upset with the sun because it moved across the sky too swiftly, leaving not enough time for his mother's tapa cloth to dry. He climbed to the top of Mt. Haleakala, and captured the sun with a lasso. The sun then promised to move slower across the sky, making the days longer. Maui is also credited with the birth of the Hawaiian islands, depicted here. Other popular activities in Haleakala are stargazing, camping, sunset watching, birdwatching, and finding the elusive Haleakala Silversword, which is found only on Mt. Haleakala. One of the best Internet guides to Haleakala is at GORP with trail details and activity instructions. By the way, Oheo Gulch (also known as the Seven Sacred Pools), past Hana is also within Haleakala National Park, although it can't be reached from the summit. If you make it to Hana, going past it to Oheo Gulch will be a highlight of your trip. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Affordable Paradise - Affordable Paradise: the Secrets of an Affordable Life in Hawaii will show you how anyone with the desire to do so can afford to live in Hawaii, and then gently takes you into the realities of island living.
