Aloha everyone -- this newsletter was mostly written this a.m., which is why I am able to get it out to you during the commercials on the news channels. Hang in there New York.

01. --- Molokini and Turtle Town ---

Molokini is a partially sunken volcano crater 3 miles off the coast of Maui. Molokini is now a sanctuary for marine life and is one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the state. The sunken crater rim protects the area from winds and the calm, clear water allows visibility over 300 feet down. The status of the island means people are not allowed to fish there, so the ocean-life flourishes.

Molokini gets pretty crowded by mid-day, which is why I wanted to discuss it now; if you are heading to Maui within the next few months, you may have a rare chance to spend a day in the area with relatively few other people around - as visitors to Hawaii are still down.

Most people take a charter boat from Kihei, which is about a 15 minute ride, or a charter from Ma'alaea Harbor which is about a 30 minute trip.

Once you get there, snorkeling and scuba diving are the best activities. The water is so clear and deep that you can see an amazing array of fish and other ocean life. You may see dolphins, turtles, whales, whale sharks, monk seals, manta rays, eagle rays, eels, octopi, and white tip sharks!

Many charters that head to Molokini will stop and provide lunch and then head off to Turtle Town. Turtle Town is a Maui coastal area home to a family of large sea turtles. You are not allowed to touch the turtles (oils on our hands can cause ulcers on their shells), but you can get in the water to swim with them.

Boat trips to Molokini are usually offered in the morning and the afternoons. As with almost all snorkel trips, the morning trips are better, but the afternnon trips are cheaper (and shorter). Morning trips will leave early - maybe as early as 6:30 a.m., this is when the waters are the calmest. I always try to take the morning trips.

Sorry ... Molokini Live Webcam has apparently been turned off

Dec 2005 note ** all the pictures I had linked to when I worte this are no more, but I have a good overhead picture of Molokini in my Lanai trip article

There are dozens of charters available to Molokini - I've heard the best things about the Trilogy charters, but they normally are the most expensive too. Just type in "molokini snorkel trip" in any search engine or try my favorite engine, Google.

---Hawaiian Word of the Week---

manini - (mah nee nee) - manini is a small striped reef fish in hawaiian waters, and the use of the word morphed in everyday language to mean small, tiny. It is a common word heard in the islands.
