01. --- Outrigger Waikoloa Beach Hotel ---

As I have mentioned, my husband and I stayed the weekend at the Outrigger Waikoloa Hotel on the Big Island's Kohala Coast two weeks ago.

Outrigger's web site

I seriously enjoyed this hotel, and will stay there again. It is located on Waikoloa Beach Drive, north of Kailua-Kona and the Keahole Airport, and is also the location of the Waikoloa Kings Shops, the Hilton Waikoloa Hotel, and some condos.

The Outrigger is located within the Waikoloa Beach Resort area directly across from the entrance to the Kings shops, and directly behind Anaehoomalu Beach.

We walked across to the Kings Shops (very short walk) to eat dinner each night, once at the Big Island Steakhouse (good American food, a little expensive, very noisy) and once at the Grand Palace Chinese Restaurant (authentic chinese food, very good - try a sizzler plate - at good prices).

We paid for a garden view, but were still able to see the ocean from our balcony. The room was ordinary - but clean and large with games, movies, and internet access on the TV. Our safe didn't work and we had to call security - the security guy was quick and professional and got us a safe downstairs.

The hotel has a large open-air lobby, with an activity desk and a concierge desk (one of the concierge staff spoke Japanese with so little English we couldn't talk to her and had to seek out security again). The lobby looks out upon the pool, the restaurant, the luau area, the beach, and the koi pond.

The lobby is very large and open with plenty of seats and a great view. We watched some of the Hawaii hula revue during the luau on Sunday night from the lobby, and all my pictures of the sunset were taken from the lobby. The luau looked great - with plenty of audience participation, authentically cooked food, and good hula and fire dancers. I believe you can buy tickets for the luau even if you are not staying at the hotel.

The pool area is actually two pools, with a slide, two hottubs, and a sand area with about one foot of water for the little kids. We saw a lot of kids running around - this is a good hotel for families.

Within the hotel is two restaurants - we ate at neither, but did drink at Nalu's Bar and Grill by the pool so my husband could watch the Packers game. While he watched the game I slept in a hammock stretched out between two trees near the walkway to the beach. That was nice, and I saw a couple of other hammocks on the grounds. We did have room service for breakfast one morning - it came up within 10 minutes of placing our order, and was excellent.

There is also a salon, a gallery, a fitness center (some weight and aerobic machines), a sundries shop with island gifts, and a coffee store within the hotel. There are also tennis and basketball courts.

Behind the pool is the walkway to the beach and ocean. You only have to walk about 100 feet past the fish pond to get to the hotel part of the beach. There are plenty of beach chairs to use and a small activity hut that gives out beach towels to hotel guests. Here you can also rent kayaks, snorkel equipment, other water toys, take a boat tour, and get a wind-surfing lesson.

The beach is long and wide with perfect white sand. The snorkeling is good - not the best on the island, but the bay is large and mild, with negligible wave activity.

This hotel can't rival the nearby Hilton Waikoloa, which is very extravagant, but it gives a luxury hotel feeling with plenty of amenities and a great beach at relatively miniscule prices. Besides, the Hilton doesn't even have a beach.

Pictures from the trip, including the petroglyphs at the nearby Mauna Lani Resort area.
