My husband and I will be taking a mini-vacation this weekend at the Outrigger Waikoloa Beach this weekend, I'll tell you all about it next week. When I made the reservations, I asked the clerk how their business was, and she said it was slowly picking up. That, combined with a recent news headline about longer waits at the Honolulu airport makes me think tourism is regaining some lost ground here in Hawaii. Speaking of Outrigger hotels, they are offering a deal to lure you in. Stay four nights for the price of three, or seven nights for the price of five! These are good hotels. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ 01. --- Hawaiian Petroglyphs---Petroglyph means "a carving or inscription on a rock". Ancient Hawaiians did carve many pictures into rock to document an event or occasion - known as ki'i pohaku (ki'i = image, pohaku = rock). You can still find evidence of this practice today on all the islands. The Hawaiians would usually use a tool made of stone to carve fish hooks, canoes, people, and animals. There are even carvings made after the Europeans first arrived of large sailing ships and European weapons. -- Where to find them ++ Lanai: - Luahiwa, in the Palawai Basin http://www.alohafriends.com/Lanai_petroglyphs2.html ++ Big Island: - At Kona's Kaloko-Honokohau National Park http://www.nps.gov/kaho/home.htm - about the park - Near Anaehoomalu Bay on the Kohala Coast http://www.bayclub.com/petro2.htm - picture http://kalama.doe.hawaii.edu/hern95/rt015/geo/pic6.html - picture http://www.beachactivityguide.com/Hawaii/Map/map01.htm - map - Puako Petroglyphs at the Mauna Lani Resort (biggest in the islands) Pictures http://sss.sd54.bc.ca/hawaii/petrogl2.jpg http://www.peak.org/~skinncr/pan_hi_petroglyphs.html http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/users/bendo/Pict/HI/picthi_hi7.html Information http://www.123hawaii.net/attractions/puako-petroglyph-archeological-district.html ++ Oahu - Kukaniloko Birthstones in Wahiawa http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/tops/kukaniloko4-12-00.html - pictures ++ Maui - Olawalu Petroglyphs http://www.mauibound.com/maps9.html - Map http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~masterma/private/wedding/honeymoon/petroglyphs.jpg picture ++ Kauai - Mahaulepu is a beach on the south shore, and petroglyphs are buried here beneath the sand, only visible when the tide is right http://www.hi.sierraclub.org/wild/mahaulepu/mahaulepu_intro.htm - about http://www.kauai-hawaii.com/south/mahaulepu_b.html - about http://www.pohaku.com/Petro%20Photos.htm - picture - Wailua River http://www.islandtravel.com/EastShore/Zone%202/WAILUA-3.HTML - picture ++ Molokai - at Molokai Ranch http://www.molokairanch.com/index.cfm - about the ranch -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Captain Cook Resorts Our ever expanding inventory currently includes more than 100 private homes and 80 condominium complexes on all Hawaiian islands including beachfront vacation rentals in Waikiki.
