The issue that was half written last tuesday was about Island hopping via boat and plane, but I have decided to delay that until it is clear how this event will change our inter-island transportation. Tourism in Hawaii dropped sharply immediately after the attack, with some hotels reporting a 50% reduction in room reservations. Many hotels and other tourism-related businesses have already conducted mass-layoffs, prompting long unemployment lines, as there just are no other jobs here. I am extremely interested in how this event will effect *your* travel plans. I have a poll on my Home page, or you could reply to this message if you have the time, or head over to my question forum. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ 01. --- The Temple on the Hill of the Whale - Big Island Activity ---One of the unique things about the state of Hawaii is it's history and the still-visible manifestations of that history that can be likened to the pyramids of egypt or caveman art in that it is a still-standing tribute to a long-gone culture. These monuments can be found on every island like the birthing stones on Oahu or the menehune fishing pond on Kauai, but I believe the greatest of these is the Pu'ukohola Heiau on the Big Island; also known as the Temple on the Hill of the Whale. Breaking down the name we find = Pu'u (hill) Kohola (whale) and Heiau (Temple). There are many heiau in the Hawaiian islands that date back to the 1700s, but this one is one of the grandest, as it was built by Kamehameha I after he was advised by a prophet that if he built it he would conquer all of the Hawaiian Islands. The Heiau is located on the Big Island's Highway 270, one mile south of Kawaihae. It is a National Park, free to enter. The trip will take you under 45 minutes from Kailua-Kona. Other interesting visitor destinations in the area are: Hapuna Beach, Kawaihae Harbor, Waimea, and the Mauna Lani Petroglyphs. Within the National Park, you will find a small visitors' center with pamphlets and information, excellent whale viewing during the winter months from the hill below the center, a path to two heiau, and the path continuing on to a small bay filled with black-tipped reef sharks that used to be the site of a Hawaiian village. The black tips of the sharks can easily be seen from the beach of the bay. The other heiau is called Mailekine Heiau, and is actually just the ruins of this Heiau. This heiau was converted into a fort during Kamehameha's rule. Visitor's are not allowed to enter or walk on either heiau, as they are sacred to the Hawaiian people. You can view the Pu'uokohola heiau from above or below on the side of the hill, and it is rather impressive from either side. It was made entirely of water-worn lava rock, believed to have taken thousands of men a year to build it by hand. There is no place in the immediate area to get the rocks needed so it is thought that the workers formed a human chain 20 miles long to hoist the rocks out of Pololu Valley in North Kohala. The temple is 224 feet by 100 feet with 20 foot high walls. It looms above the bay with a mighty presence that echoes throughout the area even when you are not looking directly at it. Once you have arrived at the heiau, a leisurely pace through the sights will take you about an hour - and will leave you with a sense of the massive spirit of the Hawaiian people.
