The popular 6-day a week auction has been a tourist draw and merchant resource for local fisherpeople for 94 years, but will be shutting down to avoid government posting of concerns about the auction procedures on the Internet. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ 01. ---Events in Hawaii---Hawaii hosts a wide variety of festivals and celebrations, the local ones usually celebrate the culture, and the imported ones come here for the weather and beauty. If you happen to be here during an event, it can be a vacation blessing; providing you with a window into Hawaii's people that few tourists really get to see. You also should be aware that like anywhere else, events can close roads and backlog hotel rooms - so plan for the big ones. Two of the largest to be aware of are on the Big Island: the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and the Ironman Triathlon. -- Merrie Monarch Hula Festival This is a week-long cultural event held annually, starting on Easter Sunday. It is a *big deal* and will shut down hotel and car rentals on most of the island as people fly in from all the other islands and the mainland to watch and participate. The event features hula halau (hula schools or groups) competing and performing authentic hula. The performances are held at the Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo. Tickets are normally sold out a in advance, but if you can get one, you will always remember it. All about the 2001 festival Pictures -- Ironman Triathlon The Ironman Triathlon originated in Hawaii, and the annual event is normally held in October. This year's will be October 6th. If you are planning a trip in October, try and schedule any flights in or out of Kona on a different day. The race path sporadically shuts down the highway to the airport, and visitors usually end up frantic when they can't make their flights. Morning is the hardest time to get through. News and information from the Official Site ***Besides the Ironman, Hawaii hosts many other marathons and races during all months of the year. The Great Aloha Run is held each year on President's day on Oahu and has an average 24,000 participants. Other Festivals that will enhance your vacation, and normally not interfere are: -- Aloha Festivals An incredible celebration, featuring over 300 events throughout 6 islands; the Aloha Festivals are the only statewide multi-cultural events in the nation. The two month long festival starts on Oahu in September and ends on Maui in October. The event celebrates Hawaii's diverse cultures; including polynesian, eastern, and western. You may have seen the Aloha Festivals Floral Parade on TV before, as it is broadcast all over the world. If you are here during the festivals, you may be able to participate in a hoolaulea (block party), parade, aloha shirt contest, fair, luau, hula, or royal ball. My favorite is the opening ceremonies at the rim of the volcano on the Big Island. The official site -- Sports events There are many sporting events such as famous golfing and fishing tournaments held all around the Hawaiian islands, but the most well known is the Pro Bowl. It will be held on February 3rd, 2002 - but tickets sell out well in advance. They are available on the Internet. There are also many smaller community events held all over the islands like craft fairs, art shows, plus local parades and historical markers. Normally your hotel or host will have information on these, plus you could search the Hawaii Calendar of Events or keep an eye on the free This Week publication available at any airport and most hotels. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Aloha Kauai Tours ~ Explore the hidden beauty of Kauai on one of our four-wheel drive adventure tours.
