Aloha everyone, everything is quiet here: the ADB meeting on Oahu went very well (http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2001/May/10/ln/ln02a.html), lava from Kilauea made it back into the ocean (http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/main.html), and the weather has been perfect for anything outdoors the last week.

01. ---Areas of Kauai---

Although everyone has their favorite, most people who have been to all or most of the islands will describe Kauai as the prettiest. Beaches define almost every coastline; it has its own canyon carved with colors, and cliffs that defy habitation. Many movies needing spectacular scenery have been filmed there, such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park. The island has a population of only about 40,000 so the streets are not crowded and the mood is laid-back. Don't agonize over where to stay too much - the island is easily driven around (but not through due to the uncrossable Na Pali Coast) in about one hour. Areas are:

South Shore

Home to the Poipu resort area; a collection of pretty hotels and other lodging peeking out between palm trees and overlooking yellow beaches. This is one of the most popular places to stay on the island, but it is not too overcrowded because Kauai does not get an excessive amount of visitors anyway. This area is sunny almost every day of the year, and the coastline consists of nothing but beach, after beach, after beach. Also in this area are the small towns up from the coast of Kalaheo, Lawai, and Koloa. There are good deals on lodging to be found here.

Western Kauai

The western side of the island is dotted with small, sleepy towns showcasing local artists and entrepreneurs and leading to Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park. At the far end of the road, where it dead-ends is the Polihale Beach Park and Pacific Missile Range Facility (naval base). If you are military, and qualify for MWR facilities, you *must* try and stay at the cottages at the naval base. They are heaven on earth.

The Coconut Coast

This is the Eastern Shore of the island, where the county seat and airport are. It gets its name from the rows and rows of coconut trees lining the roadways and coastlines. There are many bed and breakfast and vacation rental lodging choices here.

The North Shore

A bird preserve and another large resort mark this area. The towns of Kilauea and Hanalei are cut off from the rest of the world, and fringed by the Princeville resort. Both the resort and the towns in the area are favorites of visitors for the isolation and the incredible beauty of the area.

The Na Pali Coast

At the end of the North Shore area, the road ends at the Na Pali cast. Na Pali means "The Cliff". The area can only be traversed by boat or foot and encompasses hiking trails to empty beaches and spectacular views. Boat trips along the coast are well worth the money, as dolphins and turtles frequent the area and the water is a clear blue that allows excellent visibility straight down.
