01. ---Activities in Hawaii--- So, you don't know what you're going to do when you get to Hawaii. Well - it completely depends on what island you are going to. Here's my list of must-dos on each island … and you can spend the rest of your vacation lazing on the beach.

Oahu

Pearl Harbor
http://www.nps.gov/usar/ExtendWeb1.html
The greatest reminder we have in the United States of the human impact of the war, the Arizona Memorial is not to be missed. Besides, the Mighty Mo' and the submarine tour are just plain fun.

Anywhere outside of Waikiki
If you stay in Waikiki, please take the bus or a tour or a ride out of Waikiki. Waikiki and Honolulu are good for what they are; a large city with a nice beach, but they are not indicative of all of Oahu. Oahu has wide-open spaces too - and they are gorgeous.

Maui

Haleakala
http://www.nps.gov/hale/
Haleakala means the house of the sun. It is a large dormant volcano with heavenly sunrise views. You can bike down it, hike around it, or visit at daybreak.

Hana
Ok, Hana isn't for everybody, and it will take up a whole day of your vacation, but if you have an adventurous spirit, you might want to try it. The road to Hana is a long, winding road on the side of a cliff that is scary in spots, but the views are fantastic and the end destination has beaches and waterfalls like you've never seen.

Kauai

The Na Pali Coast
This area is inaccessible by anything but hiking and swimming or small boat. The land is completely pristine, and even a boat tour gives great views of cliffs and beaches.

Poipu

The are of Poipu should not be missed - if you can't stay here, you should at least check out the beaches. They are long and white, with a beautiful backdrop of mist colored mountains.

The Big Island (Hawaii)

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
http://www.nps.gov/havo/home.htm
Home of Kilauea Volcano, the most active volcano in the world. The lava is still flowing right this second, it's not always easy to see, but there are many other interesting sights here too.

Fairwinds Boat Tour
http://www.fair-wind.com/fairwind.html
I've mentioned this before, and I am going to keep mentioning it till every one in the world goes. It is just that good. A snorkel cruise to Kealakekua Bay, with barbequed hamburgers for lunch, and all manner of fun water equipment.

Have fun!

---Hawaiian Word of the Week---

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a

We've all seen this one … the unofficial Hawaiian state fish - and learning to pronounce it is a mini Hawaiian language lesson. It's easy once you break it down.

Hoo moo hoo moo noo koo noo koo ah poo ah ah

04. ---Hawaiian Article/Information Watch---

Horseback Riding in Waipio Valley
A great discussion by a visitor on getting into this valley.
