01. --- Hawaii Travel Seasons ---

In Hawaii, there are only two 'recognized' weather seasons. One is winter, the other is summer. The only difference between the two is winter is a little cooler, and it rains a little more. When I say cooler, I mean that maybe you'll need a sweater at night - but you won't notice it other than that. The ocean temperature in the winter is still about 74 degrees F in the winter (80 degrees F in summer) - great for swimming in either season.

If you will be staying at elevation, say on the volcano on the Big Island or Maui, you will see cooler temperatures, especially at night - and it even snows on the top of Mauna Kea on the Big Island in the winter. What a fantastic sight that is! Just be aware of it, and go to sea level for balmy 80 degree weather.

If you are concerned about the rain in the winter, you could just stay on the sunny side of any of the islands (usually the southern or western side). There are places in the islands with an average rainfall of 7 inches a year, and 350 days of sun. Pretty good odds for your vacation.

Now, that we've gone over the weather seasons, what about the travel seasons? What I mean by travel seasons is seasonal price changes in Airfare and hotels. To find the best deals, you should try and travel during the low season - and you'll get the added benefit of not having as many other visitor's trying to do the same thing you are.

Travel seasons in Hawaii normally are:
Low season: November to mid December and January to March
Shoulder season: (prices between low and peak) April to May and mid September to October
Peak season: June to mid September and mid December to January

Traveling in low season is good for last minute plans and good deals on airfare and hotel rooms. Travel in peak season requires a lot of advance planning - sometimes all the rooms can be booked months in advance.

05. --- Hawaiian Website Watch ---

http://www.hawaiiweb.com/
Unfortunately, only the Oahu and Maui links are currently active - but this site's information is too good not to mention now. I was trying to help a potential visitor to Oahu find free or low cost activities that her blind son could appreciate, and this website provided pictures, commentary, and driving directions to every idea I came up with. Someone is putting a lot of work into this one.
