01. ---Whales again--- Ok, here I go again about the whales - but after the weekend I had I can't help it. On Saturday, my husband and I went out with two of our friends on their small boat. We planned on fishing, but we were lucky enough to see a lot of whales. We launched from Kawaihae Harbor off the Kona Coast of the Big Island at about 9:30.

December to May is when the humpback whales are in Hawaii. They migrate here to give birth. For a fascinating look at the migration process check out this page from the National Wildlife Federation
http://www.nwf.org/wildalive/migration/whalemigration.html

The whales are always fascinating to watch, even from far away. Driving down Kawaihae Road (waimea area), breaching whales can be seen from 10 miles away, easily. We did our best not to get to close to the whales, because we didn't want to bother them, but we did get a few distance pictures.

Other whales can be seen all year round in Hawaii also. If you'd like to take a whale watching cruise in the islands here are some good choices.
