Aloha everyone, we are hopefully on the backside of a winter storm that ripped through the islands for the last few days. Weather experts blamed it on a "Kona Low", which basically brought us winds from the opposite way they usually come. It's been cold, windy, and rainy in many places - but it is starting to warm up again (by cold, I mean 65 F at night - brrrrrrr).

The good thing about the winter weather is Mauna Kea is spectacular-looking! (I hope to get a picture up soon, but haven't been able to take any yet due to cloud cover and not having my camera when it wasn't cloud-covered). The snow is down to the 7000 foot level, where I personally have never seen it. See the websites in the Website Watch below if you are interested in the summit, or skiing at the summit.

There's been plenty of new sites added to the New Hawaii Sites list:

01. --- In Search of the Perfect Kauai Beach ---

Kauai is famous for it's beaches: the first time I ever went to Kauai, it seemed to me that every inch of coast line was just one big beach. While that's not true of course, it's close for some areas - since Kauai is the oldest major island in the Hawaiian chain, more coastline has been worn down into beach.

The question is - "Which beach is the best?" While the answer is always: "It depends on what you want to do there", maybe I can refine a list for general swimmers, snorkelers, and sunbathers.

** any beaches on the North Shore are probably great during summer months, but unsafe for swimming in winter due to big surf

1. Hanalei Bay

Located: North Shore area

A two mile crescent of white sand, the bay can be calm and glassy in summer, but reach waves with heights of 40 feet in the winter. During the summer, this is one of your best choices, in spite of the tons of other people around. There is a lifeguard, and restrooms.

2. Anini Beach

Located: North Shore area
Pictures:

A good size beach with decent shaded areas, this is a good camping beach and usually not *too* crowded. When it gets windy, this is the perfect place for learning how to windsurf. There are picnic tables, showers, and restrooms.

3. Anahola Beach

Located: 3.5 miles north of Kapa'a
Pictures:

Very long beach with a protective reef, usually keeping it fairly calm and good for all sorts of watersports. The corner is considered one of the safest places on the island for keiki (children) to swim. There are picnic tables, showers, restrooms, and camping is allowed.

4. Poipu Beach

Located: South Shore of Poipu Beach Rd
Pictures:

http://www.sweetparadise.com/poipu_beach4.html
Usually safe swimming and great snorkeling, even when the north shore is seeing wave action. This is a very popular beach, so it may be crowded though. Picnic tables, showers, restrooms, and pavilions.

5. Salt Pond Beach Park

Located: Off Lolokai Rd, Hanapepe area
Pictures:

A great family beach with a large lagoons for the kids and not too many crowds (maybe it's the un-glamourous name). Decent snorkeling, and good windsurfing when the winds are up. Picnic tables, pavilions, camping allowed, showers, restrooms, and a lifeguard.

Well, that's my favorite beaches on Kauai list - I'd love to hear about your favorites.
