Aloha everyone, it's been exactly one year since my first issue of this ezine, and I'd really like to thank everyone for their subscriptions and support. I'd also like to wish you all a very Happy New Year, I hope this January 1st finds you warm and well.

I'm trying out a new format to make the ezine more easily read - let me know if you don't like it.

01. --- Hawaii Travel News of 2001 ---

Just in case you hadn't heard, here's a few bits of information from 2001 that may affect your travel plans in 2002.

-- Dengue Fever Outbreak in the Islands

Starting in June of 2001, several cases of Dengue fever were diagnosed in the islands, the first in Maui. Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitos (which we have a lot of). Dengue is common in tropical areas, but had not been seen in Hawaii for over 50 years. All of the cases so far have been mild.

Risk to visitors is low, but precautions to avoid mosquito bites while here should still be taken. Dengue has been seen on Maui, Oahu, and Kauai. The entire state has launched a governmental and residential campaign to reduce mosquitos - and hopefully eliminate the outbreak.

-- American Classic Voyages files for bankruptcy

The S.S. Independence and M.S. Patriot of American Hawaii Cruises are no longer making weekly trips around the islands, due in part to the lull in tourism after September 11th.

-- The Humpback whales are back

Humpback whales are being spotted off the coasts of all islands during their yearly migration. If you are coming between now and May, you are sure to see some.

-- Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines merge, creating a monopoly

In late December, the only two major airlines in Hawaii announced they would be merging into one company, with a parent company name of "Aloha Holdings Inc". Major concerns are job loss and price increase, but the company says they may freeze prices for a couple of years (good news since they've gone up so much recently).

There is speculation that this merger may entice some other major airlines to consider entering the Hawaiian Interisland flight market.

-- Hawaii considering gambling again

Hawaii doesn't even have a lottery (argh) but at various times over the years the legislature has considered legalizing gambling in Hawaii (hopefully confined to certain areas or resorts) to lure travelers and boost the economy.

-- Camera traffic enforcement now in effect on Oahu

Cameras are now watching Oahu's highways and intersections for speeders and those who run red lights - with the cameras possibly spreading to the neighbor islands soon. No one has said how visitors will be affected by this - if the tickets will not be issued to violators driving rental cars or if they will be sent to you via the address you give to the rental car companies, but just be aware ... in case.

-- The lava flow on the Big Island is more accessible

In August, Hawaii County laid a new road to the lava flow from the Kalapana side - this means the easiest way to see flowing lava now is not from within the National Park.

-- Renovations/Openings

Coco Palms resort on Kauai to be reopening as a luxury resort, construction starting soon.

Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa opened a new Tower in 2001, which includes a spa and a Waikiki branch of the Bishop Museum.

Waikiki's Kuhio Beach has been refurbished and is looking good.

Maui opened a new shopping center, The Shops at Wailea.

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou (Happy New Year) everyone!
