Free Things to do in Hawaii

One of the best things about Hawaii is most beaches and shoreline to 8 feet above the high water mark are free and public access in the entire state. There are a few exceptions, and those include National Parks, military bases, Hanauma Bay, and private hotel properties. This means that practically any beach you go to on any island is 100% free! Oahu alone has over 100 miles of beaches, and they are all unique, so you can't go wrong.

Even if you are not much of a swimmer, there is still plenty to do at the beach. You can build sand castles, bury each other in the sand, eat a picnic lunch under the palm trees, watch the surfers/boogie borders/windsurfers/canoers do their thing, people watch, body surf, or just plain relax.

On many of the islands, such as the Big Island or Maui, just going to the beach can be an experience that you've never had before because the beaches can be so different than anything you've ever seen before. There are black, red, green, and white sand beaches. On the Big Island, most of the beaches are black sand - from ground-up lava rock or black cinder and they are gorgeous.

There are many other free things to do also. Shopping is always free (till you buy something), historical and cultural sites are usually free, natural attractions like valleys and waterfalls and ocean views are also usually free, and hiking is practically always free.

I believe that unless you are one of those people who are happier when everything is planned, you should leave some time on your trip to do whatever comes up. It's always good to have some sort of a general plan for your vacation and that's where these pages come in - but it is very possible that you will find things you want to do when you arrive that aren't on your list - so leave time for them. Don't worry, you won't find yourself with too much time and nothing to do.
