Hilo Hawaiian Hotel Review
You are here: Home - Hawaii Travel Ezine - #77 Review: Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
Check out the Holoholo Honolulu Walking Tour at the Honolulu Star Bulletin. This week they are looking at the Downtown Bishop Estate Building.
When I first moved to the Big Island, the Army put me up at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel for almost two months while I was looking for a house to rent. It is a good quality hotel, the best in Hilo, in my opinion. The Naniloa, right next door, is also a good hotel but I like the Hilo Hawaiian better. (There are no luxury hotels in Hilo.)
The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is located on Banyan Drive in Hilo. Banyan Drive is less than a mile from the downtown area, it is lined with large Banyan trees planted by famous people (like Babe Ruth and Amelia Earhart), and it has a small golf course across the street from all the hotels. Banyan Drive is where most of the hotels in Hilo are, and it is also shared by a nice local beach (Reeds Bay) and a gorgeous Japanese-style garden (Liliuokulani Park), which is a nice place to get married if you can dodge the rain.
I stayed in a non-ocean view, which meant my lanai (porch) overlooked the parking lot, the koi pond, and the Banyan trees of Banyan Drive. The room was spotlessly-clean, and large enough for my purposes, with a separate bathroom and a tiny fridge. If you get an ocean-view room, you'll have a nice view of huge Hilo Harbor and Coconut Island, and Hilo itself.
The lobby of the hotel is open on one end (really neat when it rains), there is a small laundry room and snack room, and there is a small bar where you can get food. If you do stay at the Hilo Hawaiian, get the loco moco (hamburger patty on rice with gravy and egg - local favorite) at the bar or via room service. Their's is still one of the best I have ever tasted.
There is no beach at the hotel, but the hotel is right on the water (Hilo Harbor), and it has a small pool in the back.

Hawaii Lodging on Ebay
You absolutely can find great travel deals on Ebay, but you must be savvy about your bidding. Always check the feedback and reputation of anyone you are considering buying from. Personally, I look for feedback over 100 on expesive items (and no negatives, unless there are one or two that are well explained.)
