Outrigger reviews at tripadvisor
The Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort on the Big Island is a first-class, oceanfront hotel that is moderately priced. It is in a quiet area in Kona right next to the best snorkeling beach for miles around. If you can't get a room on the website you might still be able to find one at hotels.com, and maybe at a lower price.
The Rooms
The rooms are clean and bright with attractive Hawaiian decor and decent size lanais (porches). Our room had a shower and a square, half-bath that was great for when we had just gottten out of the ocean.
The Location
The hotel is located 5 miles south of downtown Kailua-Kona on Alii Drive (adjoining Kahalu'u Beach Park) and 12 miles from Keahole Airport. It is near the Keauhou Shopping Center and the Kona County Club Golf Course
Onsite Amenities
pool and kiddie wading pool
10 acres of tide pools and gardens
Hawaiian culture and arts program
shuttle to Keauhou shopping center and area golf
beauty salon and spa
The Beach
The beach, which is next to the hotel and called Kahalu'u Beach, is the best in town. The sandy area is not as big as other beaches, sometimes causing crowding, but the protected bay area is quite large. Every time I have gone I have seen large sea turtles right up near shore eating seaweed off the rocks. There is an abundance of fish life, both reef fish and larger fish, plus eels, coral, and amenomes. There is a bathroom, outdoor showers, and plenty of food vendors for meals.
Dining
There is a restaurant for breakfast and dinner, a bar and grill for burgers, and a lounge for evenings, all with spectacular ocean views.
We had an excellent time at this hotel, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a deal without sacrificing anything.

Another Keauhou hotel - the Sheraton Keauhou

The view from our room (we did not pay for an oceanview but apparantly some non-oceanview rooms are lucky enough to still see the ocean because of the shape of the hotel)

The tidepools at the front of the hotel

The pool - the water in the background is Kahaluu Beach

This is Kahaluu Beach, which is right next to the hotel ... maybe a 150 foot walk from the pool. This is probably the busiest beach in Kailua-Kona area, but it is so popular for a reason; the snorkeling is excellent, and you are practically guaranteed to see a turtle or two

The rocky area to the left of the beach - full of tide pools where kids can find plenty of ocean creatures

The snorkeling area at Kahaluu Beach
