Aloha everyone, the whales are back! Humpback whales were spotted for the first time this season the first weekend of this month off Maui.

Also, Maui was voted the "Best Island in the World" for the 9th year in a row by the latest Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice poll. Kauai took the number 2 spot, the Big Island tied for number 5 and Oahu was voted number 9. For those of you who haven't been to Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island yet ... start planning a trip! Oh, and The Big Island's Four Seasons Resort Hualalai was recognized as the top Pacific Rim resort.

01. Embassy Vacation Resort Kaanapali Beach

The Embassy Vacation Resort on Maui is a moderate/luxury priced hotel where every room is a suite, located right on Kaanapali Beach. I recommend the hotel, but advise you to book early, because it is frequently sold out many months in advance. If you can't get a room on the website or at Travelnow, try the local travel agents.

The Rooms
The rooms are big. Every 'room' is actually a suite with living room has a full-sized sofa bed and an entertainment center with a 35" color TV, VCR, and a radio. All suites have kitchenettes, large baths, and two phones. All suites can comfortably hold 4 people, which is especially handy if you have kids.

The Location
The hotel is located 3 miles north of Lahaina, directly on Kaanapali Beach, on Kaanapali Shores Place. It is close to Whaler's Village and Kapalua Golf Course.

Onsite Amenities
  • One acre pool with water slides
  • 18 hole miniature golf course
  • Children's activity program and babysitting
  • Free shuttle to Lahaina town
  • beauty salon and spa
  • fitness center

    The Beach
The beach is not the best for swimming- there is decent snorkeling when the water is cooperative, but this stretch is not ideal for it as the seaweed is plentiful. You can go up or down the beach easily for better conditions. But, this is a great place to see whales from during the whale season.

    Dining
There are three excellent onsite restaurants, plus a complimentary buffet-style breakfast every morning. It is average, or maybe a little above - you can get eggs made to order, and the fruit is always great.

    Misc
You will need to rent a car, unless you plan on staying at the hotel and/or in Lahaina the entire time (there is a free shuttle). The hotel can run expensive, but I believe it is worth it for most people, and especially families.

    Some web reviews

"We had a wonderful time at this facility and recommend it highly. For the price we would have paid for a hotel room a mile or so south, we got a large condo with comfortable living room, 32" TV and a gigantic bathroom with separate vanities. The view from our balcony that overlooked the gardens, pool and ocean was beautiful. Access to Lahaina was quick and easy. ...." Read the rest of this review at Tripadvisor.com

"We would recommend Embassy Suites. The suites are very large and we lucked out and got a corner room with a view of both the pool and ocean. The breakfast is "free" and is OK, but not great. As another reviewer mentioned there is a welcome breakfast (the free breakfast here is much better!) and they do try to talk you into attending a timeshare presentation. ..." "The pool area is definitely the highlight of the outdoor facilities. We found ourselves spending quite a bit of time here. The kids love the water slide which empties into the shallow kiddie pool, and there's a spa as well. Can't think of a better way to spend the day than reading a book in a lounge chair by the pool and having one of the pleasant servers from the bar bring me a club sandwich and a pina colada! ...."
