Aloha everyone, the lava is still easily-accessible, and apparently flowing down 45 foot cliffs into the ocean now.

Unfortunately, unless I can get my hands on a respirator, I won't be able to go anymore, for at least another 8 months anyway, as I have just discovered I am pregnant, and the fumes can be harmful to pregnant women. I sure hope nothing spectacular happens for a while! I would hate to miss anything.

I have compiled my pictures from my last three trips and have them up here

The new Hokulia subdivision in South Kona on the Big Island has opened ocean access to the public above Kealakekua Bay. Although the jury is still out on whether this development is good for the island or not, I still intend to check out the ocean access as soon as possible. If you get there first, drop me a line.

01. Maui Snorkeling Beaches

Don't know how to snorkel? Learn! It's a must-do in Hawaii - you've never seen anything like it. I remember snorkeling for the first time ever in Florida and seeing nothing but dirt and sand.

Then, I remember my first time snorkeling in Hawaii - it was at Punaluu Beach on the Big Island, and the first thing I saw when I put my face in the water was a 100 lb sea turtle looking right at me, about 3 inches from my face. That was a little scary, but I lived to tell about it and snorkel again.

Here's a list of good places to snorkel on the island of Maui ..

-=-=-= North Beach -=-=-=

Also known as Old Airport Beach and Kahekili Beach, this beach is located at the North end of Kaanapali Resort. The snorkeling here is very good - it's easy to get too, and a great family site.

    -=-=-= Black Rock -=-=-=

Also known as Puu Kekaa, this area is also located at the North end of Kaanapali. The snorkeling is at the base of black rock .. and it's a good place to see sea turtles.

    -=-=-= Honolua Bay -=-=-=

A protected Marine Conservatory, this bay is an excellent place for snorkeling. However, you have to park along the highway and hike down the jeep trail to get there. Located near Kapalua.

    -=-=-= Ulua Beach -=-=-=

Although this beach isn't as full of fish life as other areas on the Wailea coast, the tide pools make it worth it if you have kids - they just love all the shrimp and crabs they can find in there if the tide is low. The area is clean with good facilities.

    -=-=-= La Perouse Bay -=-=-=

Also known as Keone'o'io Bay, this beach is in the Makena area. The shoreline is rocky, requiring aqua socks to get in, but you may see dolphins and will probably see turtles, which makes it well worth it (for adults).

Also, since the area is so remote you have to be especially diligent about not going in the water if there are any waves - very dangerous. Go early in the day for best conditions.

And there you have it ... you can snorkel at just about any beach on Maui, but if you want the fishies to nibble on your toes (just kidding) you have to try at least one of these beaches. If you can only do one, I suggest Honolua Bay.

    Have a great trip! Lisa
