Aloha everyone, well, since the 21st I have been back to the lava flow twice more, once at night, and once just after dawn, see pictures here:

When I went at night, there were so many people there, that although the flow has proceeded to the very end of the road, some people still had to park there cars 2 miles away and walk that far in - I would say there were at least 1500 people there, and since there is no parking lot, that makes for a long line of cars parked end to end on just one side of the road.

Sunrise was much better; there were only about 100 people there, and the views were even better, because it was light enough to see what the lava was doing, without so much light in the sky that the colors were washed out.

Last month's issue with pictures from the flow is here

  • One more thing, if you are having a hard time finding a room in Waikiki, it may be because of the mold in the Hilton Hawaiian Village

    01. Hotel Chains in Hawaii

The best thing about hotel chains is reliability; let's face it, after you've seen one Holiday Inn, you've seen them all and you always know what to expect when you stay at one. In Hawaii, another good thing about the chains is the packages and deals sometimes transfer from island to island, if you are island-hopping.

While the hotel chains in Hawaii have more opportunity to differ in appearance, they still generally retain a similar class and service level across each individual hotel, even on different islands.

The larger chains in Hawaii are:

    • Outrigger Hotels and Condos
This is one of my favorite hotel chains in the islands - they consistently offer more hotel than you pay for, and they offer good package deals.

There are 4 outriggers on Oahu, 2 on Kauai, 3 on the Big Island and 5 on Maui. Outriggers offer the Big Kahuna vacation package, with free nights, free stuff, and discounts on car rental.

Several Outriggers also offer the Cowabunga kid's club to entertain your kids.

    • Ohana Hotels
Ohana Hotels all used to be Outrigger Hotels, but the chain created Ohana Hotels to showcase their best value family hotels -- this is where you'll find the really great deals.

There are 14 on Oahu, 1 on Maui, and 1 on the Big Island

    • Aston Hotels
Aston hotels range from budget to luxury and can also offer you some good deals. If you book on the Internet (their epricebreaker rates) you can sometimes save almost 50% off the rooms!

There are 16 on Oahu, 2 on the Big Island, 7 on Kauai, and 9 on Maui.

Be aware that some of the Astons in Waikiki are just barely still in Waikiki - but these are still only about 4 blocks from the beach, and can save you big money.

    • Marc Resorts
Marc Resorts range widely in price from location and island and you can find good deals here, including romance, activity, and car packages.

There are 4 on Oahu, 4 on Kauai, 1 on Maui, 2 on the Big Island, and 2 on Molokai.

    • Prince Resorts Hawaii
2 on the Big Island, one on Oahu, and one on Maui; the Prince hotels are grand and luxurious ... and pricey.

    • Seaside Hotels
The seaside hotels are all close to the ocean, and *very* inexpensive. Of course, you will give up some amenities for these prices ($79 for room and car!) but if you are looking for cheap, you've found it.

One on Maui, one on Kauai, and two on the Big Island.

    • Hilton Hotels and Resorts
The Hiltons are ... Hiltons - grand and luxurious - the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island is my favorite hotel of all time.

Two on Oahu, and one on the Big Island.

    • Hyatt Hotels and Resorts
The Hyatts are also quite grand - large pools, expansive beaches, and big pricetags.

One on Oahu, one on Kauai, and one on Maui.

    • Marriott Hotels and Resorts
The Marriots are also luxury hotels, although not all carry the Marriot name.

There are three on Oahu, two on Kauai, and one on Maui.
