Featured Links - Aloha everyone, well, since I first learned about it on CNN, I think I can safely assume that several of you know the volcano is acting up again. It's not doing too much differently than it has for the last 18 years - it's just doing it in a different place. For the first time since 1995, the lava is flowing directly over the end of Chain of Craters road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - and my husband and I went out this morning so I could provide you with pictures ... Also, I hate to admit it, but I am *still* having problems with my mailing list server (yes, even my new one) -- I am about to start printing these out and using the US postal service - I am that frustrated. If you missed last weeks article about Hawaiian waterfalls, it is here. Lisa 01. Easily-Accessible Lava (for now)John and I went out this morning at about 8 am to the end of Chain of Craters road. This is in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, at the spot where visitors usually park their cars to hike in to the lava, or to watch the steam plumes and glow. The turn-around is no longer there, it was covered about 48 hours ago, along with the spot where the lua (bathroom) used to be. Park rangers picked up the lua and moved it, and also created a new turn-around by pouring gravel over old lava farther back on the road. There was one felt 3.5 earthquake yesterday at Halemaumau - and the lava was apparantly moving relatively fast down the pali (cliffs) and across the road - compared to how fast it usually moves. Maybe the volcano is building up to something here -- I just hope it stays over on that side - safely away from my house. When we got there the lava was moving fairly slow - at about the same pace we usually see it at. You could stand in front of it and not have to worry about it overtaking you before you could move .. but the fumes from the steam plume, the tar burning off the highway, and the small brush fires it kept starting were pretty bad. Next time I'll bring something to cover my face with. It was also really hot - the wind was blowing straight at us off the flow, so all the heat and fumes ended up right on top of us. Ok - - on to the pictures.... For more pictures, and daily updates, visit the USGS site. I hope you can get out here soon to see it!
