Aloha everyone, first off this is the first ezine in a month because of all the problems I have been having with my mail list server. I have purchased a new one, so hopefully those problems are over. If anyone has any problems receiving, reading, or subscribing/unsubscribing with this new program *please* let me know.

If you have missed the last few issues they are here:

Thanks for your patience!

On another note, I'm sure several of you have seen or taken your kids to see the Disney Lilo and Stitch movie, and if you'd like to join in a local discussion about it, the Honolulu Advertiser is hosting one here:

01. Swim under Hawaii Waterfalls

Seems like one thing everyone who comes to Hawaii wants to do is find a waterfall with a crystal pool underneath it to swim in - and not that I blame them, I'd like to do this myself, but never have. Someday ... and when I do, you'll get my first-hand blow-by-blow, but until then, here's your guide to going yourself -- but if you do, you have to come back and tell *me* about it!

Several waterfalls are on private property and you'll need to join a hiking tour to get to them, but I will specify ones you can get to yourself.

-=-=- Oahu -=-=-

  • Maunawili Falls
You can hike out to these falls yourself, follow directions and safety precautions (plus common sense) given on above page.

  • Kapena Falls
You can hike out to these falls yourself, follow directions and safety precautions (plus common sense) given on above page.

  • Manoa Falls
You can hike out to these falls yourself, follow directions and safety precautions (plus common sense) given on above page. These falls are even less safe than others for swimming, but the picture-taking possibilities are good.

  • Waimea Falls Park
If you pay to enter the park, there are several activities there, and when conditions are good and there are no cliff diving shows going on, they let you swim in the pool below the falls.

-=-=- Kauai -=-=-

  • Princeville Hike and Kayak adventures
Two different adventures on the North shore allowing you to swim under a waterfall

  • Kalalau Trail
There are several waterfalls along the 11 mile Kalalau trail but the trail is quite an undertaking, so maybe save these for a trip when you are planning on camping in the area.

  • Wailua Kayak Adventures
You don't need to take a tour to reach Wailua Falls up the Wailua River, but if you want to, there are several to choose from.

-=-=- Maui -=-=-

-=-=- Big Island -=-=-

It's really hard to get to a waterfall to swim at on the Big Island. Some people have tried it at Rainbow Falls in Hilo, but they almost always get hurt - even the locals. Don't do it.

About the only choice you have is Waipio Valley, and since the waterfall is on private property, you must take a tour -

There you have it! Have a great time - but be very careful. Lisa

    Hawaiian Word

kipuka - (kee poo kah) - variation, or change in form of land, like a bare spot in a forest or a covered island of vegetation in a lava flow. You'll hear this word often if you visit Hawaii Volcanoes National park - plenty of lava or forested kipukas there!

    Hawaiian Article

    Keep Kealakekua Wild
An effort to keep developers from destroying the coastline on the Big Island

    Hawaiian Website

    HawaiianRainforest.org
An organization offering adventure hikes on Oahu charging only a 'free-will' donation - in an effort at education and preservation.
