Aloha everyone, the lava flow has moved, once again. The flow is no longer viewable from the access road the county recently constructed (that road has been closed) but is again visible from within the National Park. Anyone planning on visiting the lava flow within the near future should call 808-985-6000 for current information.

Reader Mike sent me a very informative comment on last week's subject, Hawaii's entertainment book:

"" Aloha Lisa, The entertainment book is a terrific asset in Hawaii. We have been using it for many years. One important point is to get the book before making hotel reservations, as the Hawaiian entertainment book has many more options in Hawaii than the entertainment book from Chicago or other locations.

It is also great for a splurge, as you can get twofors in some of the top Hawaiian restaurants and hotel dining rooms. One of our favorites is going to the Golden Dragon at the Hilton in Waikiki on the weekend, and then going downstairs to hear Uncle Jerry Santos and his friends perform. Last year, we saw some amazing hula, very different from the usual tourist fare. ""

Thanks Mike! I really appreciated the comment, and your shared experience.

01. Hawaii FAQ

I have been running andhawaii.com (formerly volcanoalley.com) for over 5 years now, and do see a lot of the same questions from visitors asked over and over again. Here is my most frequently asked questions list. I hope you find it useful.

1. Is there a boat between islands?

No, there is no ferry that runs between all the islands, you will have to fly. There are, however, boats that run between Maui and Molokai, and Maui and Lanai, mostly used for day trips and tours to the islands by visitors.

The rest of the channels between the islands are too long, or too rough for a ferry to be practical.

2. How do I get Inter-island flight coupons at discount before I get there?

I usually refer people to this site - that is the same price I pay as a local.

If you are flying straight through to a neighbor island, you may not need coupons, as the mainland airlines can get the tickets very cheap.

If you are taking a day trip, or adding a neighbor island to your vacation on your own, don't pay full price!

3. How do I get a lei greeting by a hula woman at the airport?

Unfortunately, this is no longer done with every flight that comes in, and hasn't been done for a long time. If you want someone to greet you or a friend at the airport with a lei, you'll have to arrange for it ahead of time, and pay for it. Oh, and it won't be a hula dancer - just a man or a woman in an aloha shirt or dress.

Try this site for oahu

4. How is _______ hotel, and do you recommend it.

I get this one a lot, and since there are hundreds of hotels in Hawaii, and I prefer my own bed, I rarely have stayed in the one any person is asking about. If I haven't I sometimes have been in the hotel, or have talked to people who have, so I at least have something to say.

When I don't know anything about the hotel, I find 'Net comments and point them out to the asker. I have a system that almost always turns up several comments around the web:

-- Use google

-- type in "reviews 'name of hotel here' w/o quotes
-- try also "stayed 'name of hotel here' w/o quotes

the reviews query usually gets reviews from sites like travelocity and tripadvisor. The stayed query usually gets results from personal web pages or trip reports. Both are equally useful, but I would put more stock in results from the 'stayed' query.

Here's one to start you out:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=stayed+hilton+waikoloa+village
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=reviews+hilton+waikoloa+village

I picked the Hilton because we are treating my father-in-law to a two-day stay there next week. I can't wait!

5. Where can I swim with dolphins in Hawaii?

If you want to be guaranteed to touch a dolphin, you should do one of the Dolphin Quest programs. There is one on Oahu, and one on the Big Island. It's not really swimming with them, but you can touch them and take pictures with them and watch them up close.

As for swimming with them in the wild, this is a little harder to accomplish. There are many retreats that tout their "Swim with the dolphins" theme, but none are guaranteed. Your best bet is to find a secluded beach, probably on the Big Island or Kauai, and hang out there. Dolphins with babies like secluded coves, and you may get lucky and spot a pod in the water. They may or may not stick around if you get in the water too.

6. What is the best luau to go to?

This depends on what island you are visiting. If you are on any island but Oahu, and your hotel or a nearby hotel is offering a luau, book the most convenient one, since many hotels on the neighbor islands have the same luau company throw their luau - these companies travel around from hotel to hotel each night.

If you are on Oahu, your three biggest choices are Germaines, Paradise Cove, and the dinner at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Pick whichever is most convenient.

Some luaus are better than others, in that the entertainment is longer and the food is more lavish. You'll be able to tell the better ones by the price. Most luas will average around $50 (a lot of money for a few hours) so if you see one at twice that price, you know it is very fancy. If you find one for significantly less than that, I would pass it up.

That's my most frequently asked questions about visiting Hawaii list. Have a great time on your trip!
