Featured Links - Aloha everyone, I'm sorry for the skipped issue on the first, I had horrendous computer problems for over two weeks due to two lightning storms in late February - which is strange because we almost never get lightning storms in Hawaii. The online down-time did give me time to work on a new feature: Free Hawaii Desktop Wallpaper! There will be more pictures coming soon. My current favorite is the wave at the bottom right. That's what I have on my computer desktop now. Lisa 01. Camping on KauaiRemember the general Hawaii rules that the windward (east-facing) side of any island will be rainier than the leeward (west-facing) and the south side may be windier. In Kauai, the North shore is rainier than the rest of the island - but still one of the most popular vacation spots. It is incredibly green and lush. All those that have seen the movie South Pacific would recognize it as Bali Hai.Also remember that although crime is relatively low in Hawaii, it does exist, so stay together, or near other people and keep an eye on your stuff, just to be safe. Don't leave anything valuable in your car, as there are some vehicle break-ins in quiet areas, just like any other tourist area. Kauai State Parks which allow camping** Permits needed, info hereKalalau The granddaddy of all Hawaii camping and hiking, anyone who makes this trip will have memories and something to brag about their entire life. The 11 mile trail to Kalalau is strenuous, breathaking, and filled with cliff-top ocean-views, long beaches, and secluded waterfalls. If rain comes it can be dangerous (flash floods) and even if it is dry, it is not entirely safe. The trailhead is at Kee Beach, at the end of Highway 560 on the North Shore in Haena Beach Park. Along the way to Kalalau are two camping areas that can be used as pit stops or end destinations. They are: Hanakapiai (2 miles in) Hanakoa (6 miles in) Both of these have waterfalls within a few miles, but only Hanakapiai has a beach. All about the hike(s) in You can also be dropped off at Kalalau by boat and just hike out. You may have to swim yourself and your gear in if the surf is high. Milolii The only way to get to this completely isolated beach camping area is by boat or kayak. You can have a company like Captain Zodiac drop you off (you'll probably have to swim yourself and your gear to shore). This beach is located on the Na Pali coast past Kalalau. Polihale An extremely isolated and quiet beach that is very long and scenic. Swimming is not recommended here most of the time, but there are some of the most amazing sunsets in the world off this beach. It is hard to get to and has no facilities - Find it at the end of a 5-mile long dirt road (marked with a visitors bureau sign) from Mana Village, off Kaumuali'i Highway (Highway 50). Kokee There are several camping areas within the state park which runs along Waimea Canyon. This is a prime starting point for Waimea Canyon hiking. There are showers, water, restrooms, and picnic areas. The park is at almost 4,000 feet elevation, so it is not near the ocean and it can get cold and foggy. Located 15 miles north of Kekaha on Koke'e Road (Highway 550). Kauai County Parks which allow camping** Permits needed, info hereEach campsite is closed on a different day of the week to allow for maintenance. Check with the county. Haena A great swimming and snorkeling beach during the summer on the North Shore with a grassy area for camping. Pavilions, grills, showers, and restrooms available. Located off Kuhio Hwy, 6 1/2 miles West of Hanalei. Hanalei Large and popular beach on the north shore with a grassy camping area shaded by ironwood trees. There is a boat ramp and lifeguards during certain times of the year. Located in Hanalei. Anahola An only moderately used beach in a protected bay with a sheltered camping area on the north-east side of Kauai. Surfing and swimming are popular here most of the year. Restrooms, showers, drinking water, and picnic tables available. Located 11 miles north of Lihue off Anahola Road on Highway 56 (Kuhio). Anini A large reef-fringed beach popular with locals for scuba diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing on the north shore. Showers, picnic tables, and restrooms available Located near mm 25 off Kuhio Hwy. Take Anini Rd. from the 2nd Kalihiwai Rd. Hanamaulu A normally safe beach with picnic tables, restrooms, and barbecue facilities on the southeast coast. Located off Hanamaulu road. Salt Pond A normally safe beach with a toddler bathing pond, protected by a reef on the west side. A popular snorkeling area with great sunsets. Located off Lolo Kai road which is off Lele Road in Hanapepe. Lucy Wright A beach park next to the Waimea river in Waimea, especially good for launching kayaks. Have a great trip. Lisa

Baskets by Design I recently had a woman e-mail me wanting to send a celebratory bottle of champagne to her friends vacationing on Maui. After calling the hotel they were staying at I was advised to contact Baskets by Design, as they would deliver custom baskets to many areas. The woman I talked to on the phone was very nice and eager to help. Disclaimer: This ezine is for informational purposes only. Please consult the appropriate professionals for more information.
