Please forgive me for not getting the ezine out for so long - I had my baby on March 13th, and being as he is my first, I had no idea how much time they take up - I thought they slept all day! Hopefully things will settle into a semi-routine now that he is older. He is a healthy boy, born 8 lbs, 6 oz - and 20 inches long. His name is Joseph, and he is the absolute love of my life. Here is a picture of his first dip in the ocean at one month old (Ewa Beach on Oahu). Hopefully we'll have him surfing in a few months. and some travel news ... Hawaiian and Aloha Airlines Raise Prices For Popular Flights Prices have been raised for the popular flights, and lowered for the not-so-popular ones. Read about it here at West Hawaii Today (the second story). Kona Surf in Kailua-Kona to reopen In early 2004, the former Kona Surf is expected to reopen as the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort. The hotel has been closed for a few years now, so much renovation will have to be done first, but it should be a first-rate hotel when they are done. I stayed there in 97, and my favorite things about the hotel were the salt-water swimming pool, the gorgeous gardens, and the night-time lights that attracted the large Manta Rays to it's shores. Hiking Trails to Stay Open, Hopefully Hawaii lawmakers are considering a bill that will absolve the state of liability in cases where people are injured on hiking trails if warning signs have been posted. This is a good thing, since several officials would prefer to just close the trails instead - blocking your access to unique waterfalls and spectacular views. Lisa
![]() Waimea Canyon on KauaiKauai is quite possibly the most beautiful Hawaiian island for many reasons, one of which is Waimea Canyon at the center of the island. Mark Twain visited the islands in 1866 and he is widely credited for penning Waimea Canyon as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific but actually, he didn't visit Kauai - no one knows who originally called it that, but the name fits.Waimea Canyon is a 3600 feet deep and 10 mile long canyon located within Kokee State Park on the west side of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. While this is no where near as large (or as old) as the Grand Canyon, there are similarities. The spectacular views and vivid colors are probably the most prominent. My personal thoughts on what makes the canyon so unique and beautiful is the growth within it. Although in some areas it does take on those rusty red hues that make it look like a (the) canyon, it is mostly lush and green ... more like you would imagine a valley. It offers waterfalls, birds, rainforest-like vegetation, scenic points, horses, mules, downhill bike rides, walking and riding tours, koa forests, and incredibly scenic hiking trails for beginners through advanced. Pictures of Waimea Canyon
If you don't want to hike the canyon you still could still spend a few hours looking around. The scenic lookouts and points are easy to drive to and offer great views and panoramic pictures. Try and get there early because afternoon showers sometimes bring fog and a light mist making it hard to see anything. If you want to hike, well, you are in for a treat. You can take an hour trail, or go all day and have a picnic lunch in the canyon. Many places suggest the half day trip to the 800 foot Waipoo falls as a good place to start. Waimea Canyon Directions "Take Highway 50 west from Hanapepe toward Waimea. Waimea Canyon Drive is on the right just past Mile Marker #23. The road travels through the canyon area and ends at Pu'u o Kila Lookout. Makaha Ridge Road runs off Waimea Canyon Road just before Mile Market #14 and travels to more sceneic lookouts. Numerous lookouts and trails lead off of these two roads." from hawaiiweb.com Trailhead Directions - directions to several trailheads accessing the canyon - towards the bottom under Kokee Park Have a great trip!
