Island News / My Comments

Aloha everyone ...

Sorry this issue is late, I've had a nasty cold the last few days. It may be 84 degrees here, but colds and flu still make the rounds during the 'winter' season and out of it. Last year I had strep throat in July! On that note .....

Staying healthy on your vacation to Hawaii

Traveling to Hawaii is not like going overseas (to other countries) where you need to get extra vaccinations or check your health insurance (health care in Hawaii will normally be honored just like any other state by your health insurance) but there are still a few extra precautions you can take to be sure you stay healthy on your vacation.

  • Stay Hydrated
Flights to Hawaii are long, sometimes up to eight hours, and it is very important to stay hydrated during this time. Drink (bottled) water as much as possible, do not drink alcohol, walk around to avoid vein thrombosis, and maybe even bring nose drops if the recycled air bothers you. Once you arrive in Hawaii, drink a lot of water also, especially when active; the humidity and heat will sneakily dehydrate you.

  • Bring medications
Pack any prescription drugs with you, and ensure you have a list of the brand and generic names of any drugs you take in case you need refills on the road.

  • Check w/ the CDC
Although unlikely, it is possible that there may be an outbreak of a tropical disease in Hawaii. For example, in 2001, the islands had a small outbreak of Dengue fever, which has since been completely contained. Visitors who knew about the outbreak were able to protect themselves by being diligent with mosquito repellent.

  • Use Sunblock!
This is so important. I see so many light-skinned people with horrible-looking flaming-red sunburns after their first day here. Hawaii is closer to the equator than anywhere else in the U.S. and you will get burned faster. Use sunblock (SPF 30 is what I use), stay in the shade as much as possible, and do not spend the entire day at the beach! You will regret it! Also remember that the sunlight will reflect off the ocean and get you even in the shade, so shade is not entirely the answer.

  • Beware the Norwalk virus
For the first time that I have heard of, a Hawaii cruise ship was struck with the Norwalk virus. Most of the passengers were flown home over the last week by the cruise company. More information here. Hopefully this is an isolated incident.

A Review of Maui's Kaanapali Beach as a Vacation Destination

Kaanapali Beach hosted the first resort area on Maui, the idea conceived even before statehood because of the incredible beauty of the area and the excellent properties of the beach. Today, Kaanapali Beach is still considered by many to be the best beach on the island. The snorkeling is excellent, the white, sandy beach is long and pristine, and there are even good waves on the south end. The public facilities on the beach are plentiful and well-maintained.

The quality of the hotels in this area is a testament to how prized the real estate is, but if you can't afford the luxury hotels, there are great alternatives, such as the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, officially recognized as the most Hawaiian Hotel on Maui, and voted the best value hotel in Hawaii by a major travel magazine.

Even if you aren't staying at one of the resort's lodging choices, you can get to the beach via public access, most of which are accessible through the hotel's and shopping center's parking areas.

Kaanapali Facts

  • Kaanapali, Maui is not really a town or a city, it is a resort area, named after the local beach. Anywhere along Kaanapali Beach can be referred to as Kaanapali.
  • You will sometimes see Kaanapali spelled with the okina = Ka'anapali (this is the proper way).
  • Kaanapali is pronounced kah-AH nah pah lee.
  • Kaanapali means "rolling cliffs"

Kaanapali Weather

It is usually sunny along this long stretch of beach, with an average rainfall of less than 20 inches a year. Ocean temperature is 72 to 77 degrees in the winter and 77 to 81 degrees in the summer. Average air temperature is about 75 degrees all year.

Kaanapali Beach

Kaanapali Beach is over three miles long. It starts on the south end at Canoe beach and ends at Honokowai beach park on the north end. It is split in half by Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a) which is directly in front of the Sheraton Hotel. Black Rock is a legendary ancient Hawaiian site; this is where they believed the souls of the dead would leap to the gods. These days it is legendary for its snorkeling, although the site is honored nightly with a cliff dive by a Sheraton diver at sunset. The underwater part of the lava rock (black rock) is covered with coral and the reef fish are abundant. You may also see turtles and eels, and manta rays at night. Many people learning to scuba dive choose to do their first dives here - when the waves are small it is relatively easy to manuever around.

Kaanapali Location and Driving Distances / Times

Kaanapali is located just north of Lahaina on Maui's westernmost shore.
  • to Lahaina: 5 miles, 10 minutes
  • to Kahului Airport: 25 miles, 50 minutes
  • to Haleakala: 60 miles, 90 minutes
  • to Hana: 4.5 hours

Within the Kaanapali Resort there are .. (map here)

  • Six major award-winning resort hotels
  • Four condominium resorts
  • Two major golf courses
  • over 40 restaurants
  • an historical railroad system
  • Free shuttle system in the resort and paid shuttle to Lahaina
  • Whalers Village shopping center with a whale museum

I highly recommend Kaanapali Resort for your next trip to Maui. Although it is not off the beaten path, and there will be tons of other tourists around, that is the price you pay for this kind of perfection.

    Have a great trip! Lisa
