Island News / My Comments

Aloha everyone ...

Aloha Airlines also Does Away with Coupon System

With no fanfare and nary a press release, Aloha Airlines has also apparently done away with the paper coupon system at the same time as Hawaiian did. They are offering discounts now to passengers who book at least 7 days in advance, and they do have an ecoupon ticketless system in place that functions similarly to the old coupon system.

Undersea Volcano Loihi Acting Up

Loihi, the youngest Hawaiian Volcano that is destined to be the newest Hawaiian Island in about 50,000 years has been shaking with earthquakes located between 6.5 and 8 miles below sea level. Since the beginning of last week, scientists have measured nearly two dozen earthquakes in the area of the volcano, which is about 20 miles off South Point on the Big Island (maybe they will actually be able to build a bridge between Loihi and the Big Island in 150,000 years). Scientists do not currently know the significance of these earthquakes.

Hawaii Daytrips and Tours from Oahu to Maui, Big Island, and Kauai

If you find yourself in the common vacation dilemna of spending the bulk of your time on Oahu but still desiring to see the Big Island's Volcanoes, Hana on Maui, or Kauai's famous scenery you will probably consider a day or overnight trip to the other island(s). There are several options when considering this type of travel ...

1. Get your own tickets, your own car, etc.
Most popular and fairly easy for independent types, this involves procuring interisland airfare, vehicle reservations, and hotel reservations if you'll be staying overnight.

Interisland Airfare

Book with your other tickets
If you have the island hopping planned at the same time as your original trip, you can attempt to book your interisland airfare via whatever airline you are flying out on. They most likely will not give you an option of airline, they will just book whichever they have a deal with. For prices comparable to what you can usually get on your own, look for a price in the area of $60 to $70 one way before taxes. If you let your airline book the flights, I would suggest confirming the reservations via phone with the airline the tickets are with. Safe .. sorry, you know the saying.

The airlines
The two major airlines you can get flights on are Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. There is little difference between the airlines; I used to think the only difference was the soda served on Aloha versus the juice served on Hawaiian and the few dollars savings Hawaiian gave you, but with recent new pricing structures on both airlines, who can tell anymore. If you have a choice, I advise taking whichever has the most convenient flight times for you.

Purchasing tickets on your own
The cheapest and easiest way is the web - visit the websites: Aloha Airlines ((800) 367-5250), Hawaiian Airlines (1-800-367-5320) and purchase your tickets online. At least seven days in advance will get you the best fares.

Which airport?
The Big Island is the only island that has two major airports to fly into: Kona and Hilo. If you want to visit the volcano, Hilo is almost always your best choice - the only exception to this is if you book a helicopter or plane flight from the Kona side, but if you do that, it will take twice as long to get to the volcano. Also, if you book your helicopter flight from Hilo, you won't even have to leave the airport to catch your helicopter flight.

I want to see all the islands
Non-Hawaii residents can purchase a 7-day Island Pass from Aloha Airlines, giving you unlimited interisland flights during those 7 days for $336.

How long will it take
Honolulu to Kahului (Maui): 35 minutes
Honolulu to Lihu'e (Kauai): 35 minutes
Honolulu to Ho'olehua (Molokai): 20 minutes
Honolulu to Lana'i City (Lanai): 23 minutes
Honolulu to Hilo (Big Island): 45 minutes
Honolulu to Kona (Big Island): 40 minutes

Rent a Car
Hawaii has most of the major rent a car companies on each of the major islands, so if you already have a car on Oahu, you may want to try renting through that same company on the other islands to see if you can get or extend discounts. If you want to try a local company, or something other than a car, see my issue on Car and Other Rentals in Hawaii.

2. Hawaii Day Trips through a Tour Company / Travel Agent
These trips can get you air, car, room, and/or a tour to your desired activity. Check their prices, they may be able to get you a better deal than you can get yourself.

  • Roberts Hawaii One of the bigger tour companies in the islands offering day tours and overnighters to Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

  • Polynesian Adventure Tours Another large tour company, offering two different tours on each of the outer islands, plus options from each of the outer islands to another island.

  • Affordable Tours Features overnighters on all the islands (including Lanai and Molokai, and guided one-day tours on Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai.

  • Best Value Travel Over night trips to Maui, Big Island, Kauai, and Molokai.

  • Aloha Island Tours Day tours to Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

I'm on an outer island and want to visit Oahu
In this case, the easiest way to do it is to stay on Oahu for a night or two when you first fly into Hawaii, do your activities, and then fly on to your destination island - or do it the other way around (spend a night or two on Oahu just before you leave the islands). If you bypassed Oahu and flew directly to your destination island, then you can still use one of the methods above.

Have a great trip! Lisa
