Aloha everyone, Happy 2003! This is big news to visitors and locals alike! As you probably know, Hawaii has only two major local airlines (by local I mean the airlines that travel between the islands). They are Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. Both airlines have in the past offered flight coupons, which allow locals to fly cheaper and visitors to fly at less than normal local rates. Visitors can buy these flight coupons online. Hawaiian Airlines announced today (01/01/03) that it is going ticketless and hence will cease use of all coupons. However, any coupons still in circulation will be honored so if you have bought or can find a coupon, you can still use it. Hawaiian says "the change will mean an end to Hawaiian’s production and distribution of interisland flight “coupons” effective Monday, January 6, 2003 and reliance on established published fares, which start at levels below the current market price for coupons". I guess they mean their regular fares are lower than the coupons anyway, which is news to me. I was always able to get the cheapest fare with a coupon - but going to the website I see a $66 one-way fare on the front page, which was a few dollars cheaper than the coupon price. Hmph - looks new to me, and includes a link that says Limited low fare seats. I wonder what that means .... What about Aloha Airlines? I don't know, but what one does, the other usually does, and if this is a measure taken with profitability in mind, Aloha will probably follow, since Hawaiian has been the more profitable of the two airlines in the past. Hey - but maybe I am wrong and Aloha will try to wrestle away some customers from Hawaiian by keeping the popular coupon system. How to get around it I would suggest attempting to book your interisland flights when you book your tickets out here - you may get cheaper flights that way. If not, try to book on the local airline website and see if you can get one of the low fares. I'll keep you posted! Lisa ![]() 20 year Anniversary of Constant Volcanic Eruption from Kilauea VolcanoJan 3rd marks the 20 year anniversary of the current eruption of Kilauea Volcano. What that means is for the last 20 years, Kilauea volcano has been continuously spewing lava (except for some short pauses that lasted a few days or a few weeks) in the Puna district of the Big Island of Hawaii. The toll of the volcanic activity During these 20 years, 43 square miles of the Big Island have been covered in lava, 544 acres of lava have been added to the island, almost 200 structures (mostly houses) have been destroyed by lava, and a few people have died at the flow. Where is the lava flowing/covering? The lava has been steadily covering a large area of the southeastern portion of the Big Island. It has covered Highway 130 between Kalapana and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It generally originates from Pu'u 'O'o Crater and flows down the mountain either overland or in lava tubes to the ocean. Sometimes it fountains, like in the Pu'u 'O'o picture - as a matter of fact it fountained several hundred feet in the air for several years but lately it has been flowing underground. What is the lava doing right now? The lava is flowing almost directly at the end of Chain of Craters Rd in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and has been for seeral months now. This easy accessibility is a boon for tourists and visitors alike, making it generally easy to see some live, flowing lava. For the best updates, and plenty of pictures, the USGS publishes a daily lava update page. Pictures of the Flow
At this rate, a trip to the Big Island to see the Kilauea Volcano is never a wasted one! If your next vacation is on a different island, a well-planned day or overnight hop over here may make your trip unforgettable.
