Kona Coffee
Coffee Grown in Hawaii above Kailua-Kona
June 6th, 2004
The Kona area on the Big Island of Hawaii offers a unique growing environment that produces a rich, sought-after coffee. Above Kona are two mountains, Hualalai, and Mauna Loa, so even though Hawaii is hot, coffee farms on the slopes of these mountains are cooler and normally covered in clouds in late day. Kona is also on the leeward side of the island, so the winters are dry, also contributing to the Kona coffee advantage.
Purchasing Kona Coffee
When purchasing Kona coffee off-island, be sure and check if it is 100% Kona coffee, or just a blend that contains only 10% Kona coffee. The package should say (in small print if it's a blend). You can purchase over the internet also. Purchase Kona Coffee.
Visiting Coffee Plantations
Some coffee plantations have bed and breakfasts or vacation rentals for you to stay at. These generally welcome drop in tours. Others schedule tours each day or week so people will come through and maybe buy some coffee. The Kona Historical Society holds a Living History Kona Coffe Farm Tour on weekdays near Honaunau.
