Cost of Living in Hilo or Kona on the Big Island

Can someone please give me an estimation on the cost of living for a year in hilo or kona area? I’m planning on moving to Hawaii. I’ll live in Hawaii for about 4 years.

That completely depends on your lifestyle. Renting in Hilo – you can find student rentals of a room or a studio normally as low as $400 to $600. Family housing rentals will rent at least $1000. We rented a nicer, larger home and paid $1750 a month. Kona will be a bit more normally, maybe family housing rentals of at least $1200.

Food on the Big Island is expnsive for the most part. You can find a gallon of milk for as low as $5.87 at KTA but normally they will run $6 to $8 or $9. Bread is up to $5 a loaf for a decent bread, but there is the thrift store. Gas was up to $4.40 a gallon in the summer but now is down to $2.40 a gallon. Internet access cost me $40 for DSL. The farmer’s market has a lot of good fruits and veggies for great prices.

Can you tell me how much a phone line costs a month and how much a mail box is a year.

For my phone, unlimited long distance in the U.S., plus my DSL, I pay $86.40 a month. A small mailbox is $25 or so every 6 months.

…………………….

Note – this is what I wrote in 2001 I can tell you what average housing will cost you in Hilo – $600 a month – and Kona – $850 a month – (2 bedrooms and a small yard) and I can tell you food is expensive – Gallon of milk goes for $4.50 to $5.00 and wheat bread $3.00. and standard dialup internet access will cost you $20 a month. note – ahhh dialup, lol.

It’s still an issue, but not any more of an issue than it ever was. My husband and I are as ‘haole’ as they come and we have no problems. My creamy-white skinned boy is good friends with the localest of local boys :) . Don’t worry about it. Lisa

Hi. You might want to read this post
    http://www.andhawaii.com/is-there-racism-against-whites-caucasians-in-hawaii/

there is racism in Hawaii against whites and blacks, but hapa (bi-racial local races) is well accepted.

You may not have any issues at all, or you may have some.
