Waipio Valley

June 29th, 2004

view from waipio valley lookout

Waipio Valley lookout is much easier to get to than the valley itself - if on Hwy 19, take the road to Honokaa (highway 240 - the turnoff will be near the 42 mile marker) and follow the signs until it ends at the lookout.

To drive down into the valley you will need a 4 wheel drive. The road is too steep for a regular car - a 4 wheel drive can go down in low gear offering more control and saving the brakes. It is a scary ride.

Your other options are walking down into the valley or taking a wagon or horseback tour.

  • Waipio Wagon Tour
  • Waipio Valley Shuttle
  • Waipio Valley Horseback Rides

If you are looking for the Waipio Valley Tree House it is closed at the time this page is going up, and has been for at least a year. I do not know if it will reopen.

    beach at waipio valley

Waipio Valley beach is pretty rocky and the waves are treacherous but the body surfing is fantastic on a calmer day. Just be prepared to dig black sand out of your ears for a few days.

There is also a river running through the valley (which I would stay out of due to leptospirosis fears - definitely keep your kids out of it) and wild horses and mules.
