Big Island Road Closures and Notices to Motorists

Information summarized from the Hawaii Tribune Herald, local news stories, and company releases. This is only a partial list. No claim is made as to the information's completeness or correctness.

October 21st, 2006 - I've got a whole bunch of stuff to report due to the earthquake last Sunday. Some of these things could take months to fix, so just be aware of them.

  • Akoni Pule Hwy near Kawaihae, one lane open only on the Honokoa Bridge

  • Pololu Valley Road and Pololu Valley trail are closed.

  • Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19) near Pauuilo - this was the big sinkhole that just fell into the ocean - there was a big detour on an old sugarcane road, but it has been closed and the highway has been reopened, one lane only though because the big hole is still there. Other options for getting from Hilo to Kona or vice versa are Highway 11 through Kau or Saddle road.

  • Kealakekua Bay is also closed, so no kayakers or boats or snorkelers are allowed in due to the landslide after the earthquake.

South Kona Mamalahoa Hwy 11 Oct 2-7 Slowdowns in Kealakekua between Kamagaki Market and Kealakekua Road due to roadwork. 7-4 monday through Friday.

    Highway 11 August 17-22, 2006 Thursday through Tuesday from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wide loads will be moved from Hilo to South Roint Road. The roads will be briefly closed to oncoming traffic at multiple locations along the route - especially at narrow bridge crossings and near towns (ex: Waiohinu, Naalehu, Pahala). Contact Yamada transfer at 933-8476 for more information.
