Punaluu Beach
July 5th, 2004

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is located in Kau off of highway 11 between Pahala and Naalehu. It is not a fantastic place for swimming or snorkeling because of the cold fresh water that is piped in from underwater springs. Snorkeling here is interesting though, because more likely than not you will come face to face with a turtle. They are almost always around and aren't shy about people. Don't touch them though - the oils on your hands can abcess their shells.
Camping is allowed at Punaluu Beach Park by the county.

Even if you just want to stop by Punaluu Beach on your way to the National Park you may spot a turtle. Sometimes they beach themselves to relax, and frequently they can be seen from shore swimming between the rocks, looking for food.
