Kona Fishing
July 5th, 2004

I've been on Kona fishing charter boats three times - twice on the Kalama and once on the Why Knot (these pictures are not from any of those trips; these pictures are from on a friend's boat.) The secrets to having a good fishing day are a good captain and luck. We caught four good size mahimahi one trip and nothing but some aku (bait fish) the other times.

Most of the boats basically do the exact same thing and go to the exact same places (to buoys and nets floating in the water usually), especially when someone catches something, then all the other boats head to the spot where the first boat caught something at.
If you do catch something, the fish usually is not yours. You get to take pictures with it and then your boat captain sells it at market price.

This last picture was from the same boat as the first three pictures, but on a different trip when my husband went out to Kau instead of Kona. The fish were practically jumping in the boat.
