King Kamehameha Hotel: Right Downtown
The King Kamehameha Hotel (called the King Kam by locals) (Kamehameha pronounced KAH may hah may hah) is located on the corner between downtown Kailua-Kona and the industrial-shopping part of town. 10 years ago this was the hotel of choice for my husband and I when we visited Kona side. It is inexpensive and nice and in a great location. The walk to town is short and refreshing with views of the ocean the entire way. Walking to the bars is a little far - maybe a mile, mile and a half, but it's also a great way to sober up on the way back if you want. These days, the King Kam is not quite as nice. It's older and doesn't always seem to be kept up. It's still inexpensive and in a great location, but we prefer the Hilton Waikoloa Village outside of town or the new Sheraton 7 miles down Alii Dr (it has a great pool and waterslide for our child). If however, we wanted to stay right in town, I still think the King Kamehameha is one of the nicest. The Royal Kona Resort is also a good option for right in town. If you look below at the pictrure of Ahuena Heiau, the Royal Kona is that big white thing to the left of the heiau that looks like a cruise ship. The beach right next to the hotel, Kamakahonu Beach, is not a great beach. The water is a little cloudy, it's small, and there is a lot of canoe and kayak traffic. However, it is one of the few beaches in town, has nice sand, and the water is extremely calm, making it great for small kids. Our two year old really enjoyed it. Also, just on the other side of the pier is another small beach with a lot of wave action and decent snorkeling and clearer water.
